A common question we field at Coach’s Oats is: What is the difference between rolled and steel cut oats? The Answer: Texture, time and taste! You can see the differences on our website, but below I list them for you.
Steel Cut Oats: Like any oats they start out in their whole grain form, groats. Steel blades cut the groats into smaller pieces, thus the name. Steel cut oats do not contain more nutrients than rolled oats; their benefit comes from their taste and texture. The texture is thicker, not mushy, and the oats contain a heartier flavor. Traditional steel cut oats take 30 to 45 minutes to cook on the stovetop only.
Rolled Oats: Like steel cut oats, the oats are first cut with steel blades, then “rolled” flat. Probably the most recognizable form of oats, they are rolled simply to decrease cooking time. The oats still contain the same nutrients but lose their natural texture and nutty flavor like steel cut oats.
Coach’s Oats: Coach’s Oats are prepared in a completely different way. Our patented process begins with the groats and toasting them. Toasting the groats brings the natural sugars to the surface. Next the oats are cracked into small pieces. Coach’s Oats oatmeal contains the natural nuttiness and texture of steel cut oats and cooks quickly like rolled oats. That’s right! Our oats cook in 3 to 5 minutes in a microwave or on the stovetop.
What type of oats do you prefer? Have you ever tried the other types? Would you like to try Coach’s Oats?
oh wow steel hut oats looks interesting … can we get in the grocery shop? Wish to try new dishes using that.
Would you recommend having these raw? Maybe in milk? Thank You!
Hello Jose,
I would recommend that you cook them in the microwave before adding milk for the best texture.
Pavithra, thanks for your comment. Sorry for the delayed response. Please feel free to email me at coachlizzy@coachsoats.com and let me know where you are located so I can better answer you question in better detail.
We like Coachs Oats for breakfast, but sorry, oatmeal cookies made with Coachs Oats just don’t taste as good as those made with rolled oats!
Jennie, Thanks for being a fan and for taking the time stop by our blog. Some recipes we often use a combo of rolled and Coach’s Oats too. We’ve experimented with many many types of cookie recipes feel free to check out all the different specialized ones we have https://coachsoats.com/category/cookies/
I recently moved from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. While in California we bought coaches oats at Cosco and sent them to family members in Utah as they could not buy coaches oats in Utah. Sense being in Utah I have looked everywhere for coaches oats and have been successful in finding where to buy them. We always bought coaches oats in the 72 ounce package. I would like to know where I can buy coaches oats near South Jordan or Sandy Utah. Please let me know where we can buy it as I have run out of what I brought from California. We love coaches oats and have been eating it for some years now and we miss it where we can purchase it. I am sure there is a market for coaches oats in this area only if people know where to buy it. Thank you, and waiting for your reply.
Ray, Thanks so much for stopping by and being a fan. Please feel free to give us a call or email us at coachsoats@coachsoats.com and we can further answer your questions.
Steel cut oats are great for crock pot recipes. Will Coach’s Oats do well in a crock pot with lower, longer cooking times?
So is it fair to say that coaches, rolled and steel cut oats have the same nutritional value?
Instant oatmeal does not have the same value or assistance with combatting high cholesterol?
KT, thanks for stopping by. Yes for the most part nutritionally whole grain oatmeal (rolled, steel or Coach’s) are in line. There may be slight variances with servings, and GI rate. However, the real difference comes in with taste and texture.
Are Coaches Oats higher on the Glycemic Index than steel cut oats?
Hi John, thanks for visiting the site. The glycemic index rates carbohydrate foods on how quickly they increase blood glucose levels 2-3 hours after they are eaten. Oats tend to have a glycemic index in the mid-range between foods that have the highest and lowest effect on blood glucose levels. We contacted our mill and Coach’s Oats would fall within the same range on the GI as other minimally processed oats do (whole rolled oats and steel cut oats) which is 40-50.
I have eaten every kind I could find including the style they serve in Europe. (Not a fan). I love Coaches Steel Cut Oatmeal. Yes I would like to be able to buy or order them. Information please.
Has the ‘recipe’ been changed? Seem finer, mushier texture, less flavor.
Hi Peg,
Thank you for reaching out. We have not changed our recipe recently.
Hey there! Normally get my Coach’s from Amazon but seems like they’ve had problem stocking it lately. Is this due to supply chain/logistics issues or are you moving off Amazon?
Hi Michal,
The supply chain has certainly proved challenging the past few months with Amazon but our oats should be back on our Amazon Store.
You advertise “steel cut” texture but they are not steel cut? Steel cut has more fiber than rolled oats so are better for you, especially for those of us managing sugar. Sounds deceptive to me. So how are they “cracked”? Are they steel cut or rolled at all? Is all the groat used? You speak of taste, texture, & time, but I’m interested in fiber content information for sugar management & gut health. You say it is whole grain which implies it has the entire groat? If so great! Does it?
Hi Jay,
While our oats do have a steel cut texture when cooked, they are processed differently than traditional steel cut oats. Our patented process begins with the groats and toasting them. Next the oats are cracked into small pieces. Please refer to our nutrition facts for fiber and sugar information.
